WSOP is an acronym standing for ‘World Series of Poker’. It’s a series of tournaments held every year in Las Vegas. Although there are tournaments with larger payouts than the WSOP main event, the WSOP is still considered by many to be the most prestigious tournament series in the world. Although the main event each year is No Limit Hold’em, a variety of other variants are offered throughout the series.
Wrap is the name given to straight draw with 9 or more outs in Omaha variants of poker. These types of straight draws are only possible as a result of us being dealt 4 cards on the preflop betting round. Wired is a term from Stud that is used to describe pocket pair in the hole on third street. In other words, neither of our paired cards are visible to the table meaning it will be extremely disguised if we make three of a kind. A pair where one of our cards is an upcard (visible to the table) is instead called a ‘split’ pair.
Wet in poker is a term used to indicate that a board texture (i.e. a flop in Hold’em) is very co-ordinated, allowing for the possibility of a number of draws and strong made hands. It is the opposite term to ‘dry’ which describes a board texture with little to no connectivity. The term wet is typically applied to community cards in games such as Hold’em and Omahabut could also be applied to an opponent’s visible upcards in a Stud variant.
Vulnerable in poker is the term used to describe a hand that is likely to be outdrawn assuming it is currently the best hand. For example, when gauging the vulnerability of a pair, there are typically three areas we look at. 1. Possibility of villain making a higher pair. 2. Possibility of villain completing a straight. 3. Possibility of villain making a flush. If all of these eventualities are either unlikely or impossible, then our pair should not be considered as vulnerable.
A poker variant isa specific set of rules or ‘flavour’ of poker game. The most popular poker variant in modern times is No Limit hold’em with Pot Limit Omaha in second place. There are practically hundreds of different poker variantshowever, some common, some not so much. The variants are often grouped together into categories. For example, a Stud variant of poker is any game that follows the rough format of Seven Card Stud (but with a variation on the basic rules). Hold’em and Omaha are both examples of ‘community-card’variants of poker while Five Card Draw is an example of a Draw variant of poker.
