Dan O’Callaghan

Dan O'Callaghan was originally introduced to poker during his time as an English student in Newcastle and has been playing professionally for a number of years. Best known as danshreddies online, he's had success on both the live and virtual felts, enjoying the highs of tournament success and the frustration of a WSOP Main Event bubble. He has racked up over $120K in live earnings and over $750K online from a combination of MTTS, cash games and 3 handed Hyper turbos.

Dan describes himself as 'a bit of a weirdo', bringing this quirky je ne sais quoi to his work. He's a fierce optimist too, and his light-hearted style of writing has proved popular within the poker community. He's also freakishly tall!

In poker, the term blocker refers to a card in our hand that makes certain hands for our opponent less likely. For example, if we hold AK preflop in Hold’em, it makes it less likely that our opponent holds AA. Ordinarily there are 6 different ways to make AA, but since we hold one of the Aces (i.e. we have a blocker), there are now only three ways for our opponent to make AA. We can express this by saying that we “block” our opponent’s AA combos. The technical term for blocking is card removal effect.
A backraise is a raise made after already making a call earlier on the same betting round. It’s considered a tricky or deceptive line, since we decided not to raise when first given the opportunity. We decided to just call and only re-raise after someone behind us to decides to raise. The most common example in No Limit Hold’em is where a player calls against an open raise preflop but then decides to 4bet when facing a squeeze.
In poker, the phrase angle shooting describes a way of gaining an unfair advantage at the tables. The act of deliberately trying find and use angles is referred to as angle shooting. Not all forms of angle shooting are directly against the rules of poker, but almost all of them are unfair and run the risk of getting you kicked out of the game. Once common example of angle shoot poker is to deliberately act out of turn at the table in an attempt to influence the action.
Strip Poker is a poker variant that centres around the fun and the hilarity of embarrassing your friends by replacing chips with clothing.
