Explanation of Burn

The act of burning a card from the deck does not influence the probability of a certain card being dealt in any way. The purpose of burning is to help protect against unfair advantage, whether intentional or otherwise.

The most likely card in the deck for a player to accidently see is the top card. Perhaps a momentary slip by the dealer might expose the value of the top card to especially observant players. It’s also the case that card mechanics favour placing desired cards at either the top or bottom of the deck (assuming they were looking to cheat). By following a rigid burn policy, it makes it harder for an ill-intentioned dealer to cheat the table.

Example of Burn used in a sentence -> The dealer burned two cards before dealing the river.
